Context: Throughout this transcript, Bhante Vimalaramsi is the speaker unless otherwise indicated.

this is the suit I promised you a couple

of days ago just so you know that I keep

my promises this is very interesting

because it talks about different stages

of enlightenment and that sort of thing

that sort of thing thus have I heard on

one occasion the blessed one was one

wandering in the cahsee country together

with a large sanga of monks there he

addressed amongst us the large sanga of

monks bhikkhu Bodhi got tired of read of

writing down 500 monks were traveling

within sir he said large Sangha I monks

I abstained from eating at night by

doing so I am free from illness and

affliction and I enjoy health strength

and a comfortable abiding come monks

abstain from eating at night by doing so

you two will be free from the illness

reflection and you will enjoy health

strength and a comfortable abiding now

this is this took place because after a

period of time there get to be quite a

number of our hearts and other degrees

of enlightenment and they the monks were

going out at night invited to different

peoples houses and then when they were

walking back they were starting to fall

in holes and generally harming

themselves

so the Buddha said don't eat at night

yes venerable sir they replied then as a

blessed one was wandering in stages in

the Casti country eventually a ride at

arrived at a casi town called kit Tajiri

there he lived in the cahsee town

category now on that occasion the monks

named acid g and pune pune bubs asuka

were residing and kick gurry then a

number of mounts went and told them

friends the blessed one in the sangha

monks now abstained from eating at night

by doing so they are free from illness

and affliction and they enjoy health and

strength and comfortable of ID this goes

against everything in the Western world

not eating at night when I was in

Australia I was eating just one meal a

day the noonday meal it was cold there

it was Frost was on the ground until

about eleven o'clock in the morning and

there was no problem i didn't i didn't

have any cold i didn't have any problems

at all i stayed very healthy just eating

one meal i did then it got to be

springtime and it was warm enough that

in the morning and would go out for a

walk and then i would go by where they

were fixing breakfast and sit down and

talk

with the monks and before long I was

taking a little bite of this and a

little bite of that and and I started

eating a second deal and immediately

caught a cold so as soon as i noticed

that i stopped eating and just ate one

meal a day in the cold one away very

quickly again that goes against an awful

lot of people in the western world

because they think you have to have

three meals a day and well you have to

eat breakfast that's the best meal of

the day but actually I do very nicely

without doing that although I have

slacked off in the last few years and

started eating a bagel

come friends abstain from eating at

night by doing so you two will be free

from illness in affliction and you will

enjoy health strength and comfortable

abiding when this was said the monks sog

and the other monk told those monks

friend we eat in the evening in the

morning and in the day outside the

proper time by doing so we are free from

illness and affliction and we enjoy

health strength and comfortable abiding

one of the things that you'll find when

you really start looking at the amount

of time it takes to get the food prepare

the food eat the food and digest the

food it winds up being about a

three-hour chunk of the day so if you

don't eat any in the evening like we're

not doing right now then you have a lot

more time for meditation and your mind

stays very bright and alert now the food

here is exceptional you don't get hungry

after eating the noonday meal it's the

right amount of hard food and soft food

so you would stay really healthy and you

have a lot more time to do the

meditation and you say oh that's

nonsense but you always have a mental

lag after eating and you've your mind is

dull because all your energy starts

going into digesting the food so

why should we abandon a benefit visible

here and now to pursue a benefit to be

achieved at a future time we shall eat

in the evening in the morning and in the

day outside the proper time since the

monks were unable to convince the monks

SOG in the other monk they went to the

Blessed One after paying homage to him

they sat down at one side and told him

all that had occurred adding venerable

sir since we were unable to convince the

monks SOG and his friend we have

reported this matter to the blessed one

then the blessed one addressed a certain

month us come monk tell the monks acid G

and his friend in my name that the

teacher calls them yes been herbal sir

he replied and went to the monks acid G

and his friend and told him the teacher

calls you friend yes friend near applied

and they went to the Blessed One after

paying homage to him sat down at one

side the Blessed One then said monks is

it true that when a number of months

went and told you friends the Blessed

One and the saga now abstained from

eating at night and they invited calm

friends abstained from eating at night

and you told those monks friends we eat

in the evening why should we abandon a

benefit visible here and now to pursue a

benefit to be achieved at a future time

we shall eat in the evening in the

morning and

the day outside the proper time yes bin

erable serve monks have you known me to

teach the dom on such a way as this

whatever this person experiences whether

pleasant or painful or neither painful

nor Pleasant unwholesome States diminish

in him and wholesome states increase no

venerable sir monks have you not known

me to teach the Dhamma in such a way as

this here when someone feels a certain

kind of pleasant feeling unwholesome

states increase in him and wholesome

states diminish but when someone feels

another kind of pleasant feeling

unwholesome States diminish in him and

wholesome states increase here when

someone feels a certain kind of painful

feeling unwholesome States increase in

him and wholesome states diminish but

when someone feels another kind of

painful feeling unwholesome States

diminish in him and wholesome states

increase here when someone feels a

certain kind of neither painful more

pleasant feeling unwholesome States

increase in him and wholesome States

diminish but when someone feels another

kind of neither painful or pleasant

feeling unwholesome States diminish in

him in wholesome states increase yes

venerable sir good monks if it were

unknown by me unseen unfound unrealized

uncontracted by wisdom I'm contacted by

wisdom thus here when someone feels a

certain kind of pleasant feeling

unwholesome States increase in him and

wholesome states diminish what kind of

feelings are those that unwholesome

states

increase in wholesome states diminution

of sensual pleasures sensual pleasures

and unwholesome states increased never

did that would it not be fitting for me

not knowing that to say abandon such a

kind of pleasant feeling

wholesome station

would be fitting for me not knowing that

to say abandon such kind of pleasant

feeling okay saying if if I didn't know

that certain Pleasant feelings of rose

that I wouldn't say that it's that you

should you should stop those you should

stop getting involved with those but of

course it is known by me seeing found

realized content contacted by wisdom

thus here when someone feels a certain

kind of pleasant feeling unwholesome

states increase in him and wholesome

states diminish that I therefore say

abandon such a kind of pleasant feeling

if it is unknown by me unseen unfounded

and realized I'm come contacted by

wisdom thus here when someone feels

another kind of pleasant feeling

wholesome states diminish in him and

wholesome states increase would it be

fitting for me not knowing that to say

enter upon and abide in such a wholesome

such a pleasant feeling no venerable sir

what is a kind of pleasant feeling where

unwholesome states diminish and

wholesome states increase what the

problem is that's part of the answer

that's right the drama because it is

known by me scene found realized

contacted by wisdom thus here when

someone feels another kind of pleasant

feeling unwholesome states diminishing

him and wholesome states increase that I

therefore say enter upon and abide in

such a kind of pleasant feeling here

when someone feels a certain kind of

painful feeling unwholesome states

increase in him and wholesome states

diminish is it right that I say without

knowing abandon such a kind of painful

feeling if it were unknown by me but

because it is known by me contacted by

wisdom thus here when someone feels

another kind of painful feeling

unwholesome states diminish in him and

wholesome states increase that I

therefore say enter upon and abide in

such a kind of painful feeling what kind

of painful feeling is it that arises

where unwholesome states diminish and

wholesome states increased another job

no so painful painful feeling

the hindrances and letting go of the

hindrances that's the scissors that's

the same but that indicates in a kind of

elaborate often equanimity or non

reactive and reactive pneus allowing it

rustic and oh well the air it's it's

meditation pain and that's basically the

entrances yeah and allowing the

hindrances to be without getting

involved with yeah certainly yeah and

that that is yeah and that's how the

unwholesome states become less and the

wholesome states become more because you

start letting go of the identification

with those hindrances requires a clear

strength in concentration and Parsons

yes definitely now isn't that part of

the other genre in it leads to the drama

yeah I see she's atmosphere yeah and the

reason that it leads to the jhana is

because eventually you let go of that

identification and then your mind is

wholesome it's very delightful to be to

be there to understand that as it occurs

yes difference and not that kind of

balance oh yeah cruises around or

touches people and then certainly has

the potential together

and what is that other word in opening

so suta la palma kota promoted promoting

is really you're saying gladness emoji

or four monkey I can't remember I don't

think i have no Chuck is in it your

apology okay yokomo gia and you're

always one dance but you said really

yeah that is the stage right before the

PT is is the the relief of letting go of

the unwholesome state of the Hendrix

maybe of the three Venus one day see

William is kind of when the hem rinse is

there definitely and when you let it go

relief if it were unknown by me but

because it is known contacted by wisdom

thus here when someone feels another

kind of painful feeling unwholesome

states to I've already read that if it

were unknown by me but because it is

known and contacted by wisdom thus here

when someone feels a certain kind of

neither painful nor pleasant feeling

unwholesome stapes increase in him and

wholesome states diminish now what kind

of neither painful nor pleasant feeling

causes unwholesome states to arise and

also states to diminish neither painful

and are pleasant feeling

labyrinth it definitely is a lack of

awareness and it is indifference and the

indifference is the danger of the

indifference is that you don't have

mindfulness or rides and you just kind

of push off it out I told me that so

what don't care isn't it the enemy of

equanimity yes it is it definitely is

therefore I say abandon such a kind of

neither painful nor pleasant feeling if

it were unknown by being but because it

is numb and contacted by wisdom thus

here when someone feels another kind of

neither painful or pleasant feeling

unwholesome States diminish in him and

wholesome States increase what is that

in neither painful nor pleasant feeling

unwholesome States diminish in him and

wholesome States increase it with

anything and quite often with the with

the suit as they point at the equanimity

that you feel in the fourth drama

because it talks about having neither

pain nor pleasure came on with you

please and that's the increase mandates

equanimity balance the same thing pretty

much foundation but the things the thing

is in in each one of the dramas there is

equanimity yeah it's just not as strong

as it is when it gets all the way up to

the 4th jhana and it's actually not even

mentioned very much until the third

jhana but you have equanimity in every

one of the jhanas it just keeps building

and getting stronger and stronger and

stronger

monks I do not say of all monks that

they still have work to do with

diligence now we're going to get into it

and nor do I say of all month that they

have no more work to do with diligence I

do not say to those monks who are our

odds with tanks destroyed who have lived

the holy life done what had to be done

lay down the burden reach for the reach

the true goal destroyed the fetters of

being and are completely liberated

through final knowledge that they still

have work to do with diligence why they

have done their work with diligence they

are no longer capable of being negligent

well since it's their business hard

working hard working working really hard

if you're diligent you're working very

hard night at NCI the other civil best

light working to do that's instead of

nestle workers applying or something

yeah yeah I say it such monks who are in

higher training whose minds have not yet

reached the goal and who are still

aspiring to the Supreme security from

bondage that they still have work to do

with diligence why is that because when

these venerable make such a suitable

resting place and associate with good

friends and balance their spiritual

faculties they may have realized for

themselves with direct knowledge

and now entered upon and abided in that

supreme goal of the holy life for the

sake of which clansmen rightly go forth

from the home life into the homeless

seeing this fruit of diligence for these

monks I say that they still have they

still have work to do with diligence now

this is talking about someone who has

had the path knowledge of para hot chip

but they have not reached the fruition

of our hardship yet what you'll be fine

miss me oh yeah so so the Buddha says

you still have more work to do you still

have to it not much just get into the

fruition and you got it big guy you know

that's kind of it that's all interesting

phrase in here about balance the

spiritual faculties yes so you define

the fact i'm always looking for this you

define each one of the faculties the

five then when you get them into balance

and they're all the time there they

become the powers right of course ok

let's see what you saw more germane

children 14 doesn't that also contribute

to the may truly people and gets off of

joy

well but it's more than joy since the

it's the 707 enlightenment factors in

balance and they're talking about the

spiritual faculties that that is your

your faith and energy and mindfulness

collectiveness and no onion wisdom the

five faculty is just okay well yeah

that's confidence let's see the way the

way that I teach the five faculties is I

actually teach six because first there

has to be curiosity and then you work

and you see that the practice starts to

work and you gain real confidence as

your confidence improves the amount of

energy you put into your practice starts

to take hold when your energy is good

your mindfulness gets very sharp with

the mindfulness your mind becomes very

collected and clear and that leads to

wisdom seeing dependent origination fee

so my five faculties are actually six

faculties because they throw in

curiosity is kind of rude the bonus was

investigation oh well yeah yeah it does

what does any curiosity yeah what you

hold on to hear you have to be curious

first before you investigate my all

right cuz investigation is a is a sort

of swell by step thing

you know your investigation oh yes I

just I know you do invest and then cool

cool become stronger before I don't use

some depth about cost of eating or

healing and then this something well

that's mom to my way of thinking that's

more practice yeah see the thing you

always keep in mind is that the Buddha

was a meditator and when he was teaching

everything he was teaching was in the

framework of meditation so when we

understand words then we have to back up

and say he was a meditator selling the

mind of the meditator what does it mean

every single time it gets really

interesting when you start doing that to

suit us especially the Eightfold Path

because that there's an awful lot of

definitions of the fold path and now

they'll say even in in this book they

will say the Eightfold Path well yeah

you got to practice it but you're

already practicing morality so you don't

have to look at right right speech right

action and right livelihood so that

immediately takes the Eightfold Path and

makes it a five fold path and then they

say the concentration well it says that

concentration is our right concentration

is getting into all of the dramas but

that also includes access concentration

and moment to moment concentration so

what you're doing is basically taking

right concentration and not following

what it says in the suit that's so you

have a four fold path I got in a big

argument last summer

with someone in purple we won't name

when I started saying that i really

don't agree with taking these three

factors of right speech right action and

my livelihood out of the Eightfold Path

because they are part of the practice

and that's what it said in the suit tub

and then I told them I don't agree with

that and then our resident Pali scholar

after listening to everything he SAT

back and he started thinking about it

and he started laughing because he said

this argument has been going on for two

thousand years and what it is it's the

argument between monks that do the

meditation practice and the scholar

monks the scholar monks they want to

take these three out because they say

you're already doing it and the

practicing monk say no you can't take

any of that up because you're constantly

using it was so with when he laughed and

agreed with me I got to laugh I wasn't

really agreeing with that I was looking

at the possibility of it well picking

hairs here yeah well monks there are

seven kinds of persons to be found

existing in the world what seven they

are one liberated in both ways to be

liberated in both ways means that you

experienced the four Gianna's you

experience the for aruba jonna's and you

see dependent

that's being liberated in both ways now

you have one liberated by wisdom and

that's someone that doesn't go through

all of the aruba dramas but they still

see the dependent origination then we

have a body witness and the body witness

is someone that gets to the stage of a

Nagomi and we'll go through these with

the suit is in a minute one who has

attained to view the one who has

attained to view is a socket agami

that's the second stage of enlightenment

of awakening excuse me I just got to

talk to somebody about don't use the

word enlightened one liberated by faith

this is a person that hears the Dhamma

they understand the Dhamma and they

become a stream inter with the fruition

then we have a dama follower this is

someone that practices meditation and

they become a stream in true but they

don't have the path knowledge I mean the

the fruition knowledge and a faith

follower a faith follower is someone who

hears the Dhamma and they have the path

knowledge but they haven't gotten the

fruition knowledge yet can you say

something about portion i will in just a

minute okay oh yeah derma follower

somebody that practice met

asian entertained the first stage of

enlightenment without first first stage

of awakening without having the fruition

okay what kind of person is one

liberated in both ways here's some

person contacts with the body and abides

in those Liberation's that are peaceful

and immaterial now the contact with the

body is talking about the breathing

meditation and it's also talking about

the brahma vihara transcending forms and

his tanks are destroyed by his seeing

with wisdom seeing with wisdom is always

same dependent origination this kind of

person is called one liberated in both

ways so they have all of the jhanas and

they see with the dependent origination

I do not say of such a monk that he

still has work to do with diligence why

is that he has done his work with

diligence he is no more capable of being

negligent that means that he doesn't

have any ignorance arise in him ever

again he doesn't have any anger arises

in him ever again he doesn't have any

lust arise in him ever again he sees

everything as an impersonal process that

arises and

away is got an incredibly brilliant mind

this is the advantage of becoming an AA

raha I could did you gon call me beat

what kind of person is one liberated by

wisdom here some person does not contact

with the body and abide in those

Liberation's that are peaceful and in

material transcending forms but his

taints are destroyed by a seeing with

wisdom now that's always saying

dependent origination but it would be

someone that has one of the jhanas and

all of a sudden they're mine is ready

and the cessation of perception and

feeling occurs and then they see

dependent origination and then they

attain nirvana

now and this is a person that not only

has attained a bond that has also gotten

fruition now venerable sariputta and

venerable mogul Lana the first and

second Chief disciples they both

practice mindfulness of breathing they

both went through all of the jhanas and

in material jonna's and attain nirvana

be screaming with the breathing

meditation at laser vapor don't change

what it is my my biggest thing in this

country is that there are so many people

practicing mindfulness of breathing not

following the Buddha's instructions yeah

and it takes them someplace else

completely to an a.1 pointed absorption

kind of meditation I have done that

myself I could project myself easy into

every place around to especially at the

canyon lakes' with the waves and water

and it could right there and over there

was that movie that I was standing very

scary and then somebody comes in and

grab raid or walks through that

connection it's a secure connection then

you are out of luck to return there are

certain kind of energies that you have

to be very careful with especially the

one point it kind of Oh kind of

concentration because there can be there

can be so many different things that can

arise you start getting a ringing in

your ears all the time you get tricky

small to see yeah yeah yeah yeah it'll

make me a stiff like like a board like a

board did he get the mind was somewhere

a dependent deflating only thanks to my

husband who understood these things and

you had to write some whatever and he

helped me out of it that finished my

experimentation ya gotta be did you

sleep in without knowing that was kind

of what you are seeing with our

knowledge without realizing the fruition

and the different levels and stay down

to others yeah but there's a the reason

that I pushed the loving-kindness

meditation so much is because everybody

if I tell them practice the way the

Buddha teaches they would do it at first

and then they would slip back into their

old habit of

meditation and when we change the object

of meditation now they have to start

over again but their progress is fast

it's just that you need to have a kind

of meditation where you don't have these

old habits that you fall into their way

you ain't get yourself yes gentlemen

always falling back into medication of

meta and she was Kendall impressive

schizophrenic or something this is

country she came and deeper years but

the meta head she would count in 35

times to sing sentence on that primitive

level but it brought her back well if we

have that extra step of relaxing is

coming back happens much faster for she

was really hard working to be able to do

that if she had had with sensory

awareness practices and kind of emotion

to other ways it can become angry yeah

I've had some some students that I've

told I don't want you to meditate I tell

them that they have to practice smiling

in the apt approach yeah saying thanks

to other people that are very kind and

you have to practice helping other

people because the practice of

meditation is not just sitting sit city

yes it's not just sitting and looking

like the Buddha image there the practice

of meditation is all the time and it

includes practicing your generosity and

I tell the students very clearly that

they have to practice smiling so they

can get this mile away and you have to

keep your five precepts that is a basis

for having at their mind when you keep

the Five Precepts very closely it is a

general kind of mindfulness that has to

be developed so that when you're ready

to do the sitting meditation you're

sitting meditation progresses very

quickly but one of the problems I'm

seeing in this country is you go to a

retreat and they have you take the five

precepts in poly one time for the

retreat and nobody really knows and then

when they get off retreat they say well

that was that part of my life now I'm

going to go back and be the way I was

and there's no personality development

so when they come for the retreat the

next time

take some five to seven days to calm

down before they can actually start

doing the retrieval but you've seen on

this retreat for yourselves how fast you

get into the meditation when you keep

the Five Precepts it's very important

we've had something to do with our

mentality getting at it and getting to

their higher leather or whatever in

ideal so they forget about settling and

into deeper understanding and of the

expansion and the power of the presets

and then it is basically a kind of an

illusion anyway it is the old-fashioned

and it is bad and so I thank you to the

Christians for that one time thanks for

the Christians for that one yeah they

want everybody to break the precepts so

they can feel guilty yeah and then they

have to go to the church to get

abstained from that guilt we already

have sinned so what's the big deal they

have to be done very very slowly these

presents I see them as a kind of an

offering of peace and themselves instead

of Commandments it ever get away from

that I had a funny thing happened in

Malaysia one Chinese man said okay okay

I'm convinced I'll keep the precepts how

long do I have to do it I told him well

we can start it

years and go up from there okay what

kind of person is a body witness here's

some person contacts with contacts with

the body and abides in those

Liberation's that are peaceful in a

material transcending form and some of

the states are destroyed by seeing with

wisdom this implies that there you get

up to be an auto Ghani some of your

tanks are destroyed not all of them the

first five taints are destroyed and they

are doubt belief that rites and rituals

lead to awakening a belief in a personal

self lust and hatred that it's

definitely a worthwhile thing I mean

think about it no hatred no aversion

ever rising in your mind again even if

you try to get angry or mind would laugh

at you and saying go we're not going to

play that game that's really truly a

wonderful accomplishment to have

something like that occur and the reason

that only part of the taints are

destroyed is because there is some

slight attachment to the craving and

blinging it's light but it's still there

for what

saving and cleaning well you'd have to

ask them but they still have their mind

gets very pure and they'll they'll

experience Nibhana but there's still a

slight clinging to things still a slight

bit of craving this they're expressing

education well at that point you

wouldn't have any irritation but you

still would have you would have pride

you still have some desires for getting

to higher realms you still have a little

bit of ignorance you still would have a

slight bit of restlessness and you would

still have a slight bit of sloth and

torpor but not slot that's more like

that your mind is dulls out a little bit

someday it's not as sharp as it could be

those are the five fetters that when you

get to be an AA raha donor right they're

gone no

but this is a person a person that has

gotten abides in those Liberation's that

are peaceful and in materials so they're

talking about getting through all of the

jhanas and transcending form and some of

the taints are destroyed by seeing with

wisdom this kind of person is called a

body witness and again the body

witnesses someone is doing the

mindfulness of breathing and the Brahma

viharas will take you to and actually

the breathing meditation meditation

takes you to the realm of nothingness

and then mind becomes so subtle that you

can't tell whether it's really there or

not so you don't see the aggregates you

don't see the the breath at all you

don't see any of the brahma vihara

anymore your mind becomes exceptionally

bright and clear and very lucid I think

that's a good word for it and you will

be in this state for a period of time

that's neither perception nor not

perception and when you come out then

you reflect on what happened while you

were in that state and while you're

reflecting about what happened in that

state you're sick saarang it with this

your 6r4 the thing right beside you

relax for a smile return and continue

what was it resume resume / 10 to resume

Oh what he was there when we started

this he said because I know yeah why do

you say he's mine you're supposed to be

but is he lost you smile well because

you have a tendency to let it go and

this is just it's a way of keeping mind

light alert and imbalance and I had

someone scold me by email telling me

that the Buddha never taught us to smile

he taught us to be happy not ever to

smile and what could I say none of the

symptoms I've ever run across directly

tell you to smile meeting that is

included in joy or in your course and it

doesn't exist it that word doesn't exist

but the feeling of it certainly does

yeah well we put it on statue you

remember it for some reason didn't they

it's like in that smile that's not

always to be on a mouse well when you

look at the Buddha images the ones that

are really good they always have this

room a little smile on their face and

that's that's the artist telling us the

Buddha had joy and sometimes you see the

the eyes are half open and i've had i've

gone to people that tried to tell me you

should sit with your high

open all the time but that is a

manifestation of the all-pervading joy

you'll be sitting in orders and your

eyes open they don't open wide but they

open and you close them and they open by

themselves so okay let them be but

that's just one of the things that

happens and that's what the artist that

does the Buddha image is trying to show

that there is this all-pervading joy

I say of such a monk this that he still

has work to do with diligence why is

that because when that venerable one

makes use of a suitable resting places

and associates with good friends and

balances and spiritual faculties he may

by realizing for himself with direct

knowledge here and now enter upon and

abide in that supreme goal of the holy

life for the sake of which clansmen

rightly go forth from the home life into

the homeless seeing this fruit of

diligence for such rama I'd say he still

has work to do so any and actually you

can say even the person that has

attained our hot ship and not had the

fruit he still has work to do there's no

real personality change until the

fruition occurs and during the time of

the Buddha there were people that were

walking around that were not on the path

but without the fruition now how does

the fruition occur the fruition occurs

at sometimes it can occur very closely

like sorry boots I started talking about

Ian mogul Anna when Sri butta how he

attained nirvana was he did a lot of

sitting and he's been about two weeks

going through all of these jonna's and

all of that and he still had one slight

attachment and well he was he was

standing behind the

Fanning the Buddha wala bhutta was

giving a dominant talk and it occurred

to sorry puta that the Buddha was not

even attached to the Dhamma and as soon

as he realized that he let go of that

little tiny teeny attachment and he

became an are hot while he was Fanning

and he became he had the path knowledge

and the fruition knowledge happened very

closely together and he became the RI

but even that little tiny thought of I

really like this Dhamma I want to see

more that little tiny attachment was a

thing that stopped him from attaining

the ivana now the fruition can occur

really fast depending on the conditions

of your ear practice or it can happen at

some time in the future it might be next

week it might be next month it might be

next year it might be five years from

now who knows but what happens when you

first experience a bona you see

dependent origination and you see the

cessation of dependent origination you

don't really know what state you're in

until you do attain the fruition now

let's say next week after you have the

experience of Nevada right now that's

that's the opening you're destined to

have the fruition arise at some point as

long as you take care to watch what you

do with the sense pleasures

and that sort of thing and you're

cleaning the house or washing the dishes

or doing whatever you do and all of a

sudden your mind starts to get really

deep and you think I'd better sit down

for this so you sit down and you start

watching and that Nibhana occurs again

and if you're a soda pas de you will see

the fruition and the fruition is seeing

dependent origination arise and then

pass away one time if you're a sock

tegami you will see it a rise and pass

away two types if you're an auto gani

you will see it arise and pass away

three times and if you're a are a hot

you will see the fruition arise and pass

away four times and right after that

there is

the biggest happiness that arises that

you could imagine they're so every cell

in your body rejoices and that

understanding from seeing dependent

origination four times is so strong that

there is definite personality

development now you have the experience

of Nirvana happen right now and you can

come to me and say I had that experience

and I say good who sits some more and

that's the last thing you want to do but

if you can sit and six are even this

powerful feeling of joy and you feel

like dancing and you feel like flying

and you feel like doing anything other

than sitting but if you can do it you

can have the fruition occur a little bit

work with me with that knowledge I

thought you see the arising and passing

away of I mean though the forward and

backward of different energy yes so then

you see it again with food fruition now

you see it again with preferred

knowledge depending on the stage that

that you have a tape right by how many

times you would see it it's not what is

the next one right after that happens

fast so what and causes for wishing I

think well it's it's good your mind

needed to take a rest for a little while

that you keep on with your

just being very mindful of your sense

doors and that sort of thing you keep

purifying your mind you keep six rning

everything and then when that's done

enough it will arise again I had one

student in Asia that she had the

experience and then she called me up

like two days later and she said I just

had the experience again and I saw this

happen two types and then she called up

I think it was the next day and she said

I just had that experience again and it

happened three times hmm and I said oh

good continue and it never happened

again so she became a nonagon and when

that happened that gave me the

opportunity to leave Asia and come back

to this country because I had left a

teacher there she could teach anybody

with the meditation because she

understood it so thoroughly I have a lot

of people that asked me if I give a

course for teachers and it's the same

course for everybody and I would not

consider calling anyone a teacher until

they have the experience of the fruition

of

the experience and experience of the

bottom yes so if a person has the

fruition of a soda paana and that person

continues to work then and if the person

if the conditions are right that person

can progress oh you and then the

sittings worry or you do see the

dependent origination are the relations

you don't have to go through path

knowledge so you will go through

pathology yet again yeah okay but again

you don't know what's going to happen

until you get to the fruition knowledge

you don't know if you got to the second

stage or the third stage or the fourth

state it depends on the fruition

knowledge itself so that's the

determining factor that's the

determining factor well the in the case

of the person that you describe the

fruit is she had several fruition zochor

one after another but in between she

also had the occurrence of path

knowledge again really why'd you

elaborate on the Croatian is more well

the fruition of seeing dependent

origination the arising of it and the

cessation of it and when you see it so

closely together with two times or three

times or four times it affects your

understanding of dependent origination

so that you have the deep realization

it's a kind

understanding because of that you know

this closeness and you see it on the

horizontal level I'm innocent I don't

know how to you see to make well this is

not simultaneous you see one right after

the other but they happen very fast but

your mind is so lucid at that time yeah

that there is deep understanding and

it's like you see it the first time and

there's the understanding and you see it

again right then oh now I see it and

then you see it again oh and then

there's the complete understanding when

you become an hour

I keep on time maybe one of these days

I'll add that to my book I've been

talking about that for 18 years now oh

you wrote an awful lot of material on

the fruition then he crashed his

computer lost everything and hadn't

backed it up hmm I had 50 50 pages

written 40 pages something like that and

it was really good and I've gone to all

these different souta's and I was

pulling out the citizen saying see this

is what it says here this is how it

works and then it all went disappeared

but now he has an external hard drive to

play with so yeah well I have to get in

the mood for going back and doing all

that research again not easy right I'm

kind of waiting to be honest be windy &

goo training kiya comes out I'm Anka

with bated breath I'm waiting for that

because it's there's there's a lot of

information on how dependent origination

works in that and a lot of the things

from the ANBU trainee kya first were

brought into the Hobby demo that's how

the Alabama got started it took a lot of

the things that we're talking about

dependent origination they started avi

dama and started adding to the

understanding of the

an origination and then over the years

it started going in other directions

that's what happened at the third

Buddhist council they introduced the

abhidhamma so that there would be a

clear understanding of how dependent

origination actually does work there are

only five concerts in Cebu dizer truth

well it depends what country are talking

about I talked about the Burma thats it

was 52 yeah that was the sixth I was

little bit after then yeah those complex

and fifteen thousand monks came from all

over the world yeah comparing the sutras

different countries and it was from my

teacher who initiated it oh good don't

worry of Dallas I didn't know that

painting ago yeah so that was the sixth

one sixth buddhist council the fifth is

when they they met in the 1800s i think

and they put the entire to pit Akkad

they put it in marble and they put gold

in the carved out letters and that was

there for a little while before somebody

started coming picking out gold but is

it true that they like the mahayana and

state every time the terracotta had a

council than the Maya

counsel do one on one thing no no it

takes an amazing amount of effort so

again put a council on and they really

have the mumps that come to it they have

to feel that it's really necessary right

now to do that Doctor Who complex your

ears and for accommodation and for three

years they were working fifteen thousand

monks yeah I see any my issue of

necessity at that time was kind of

forged forward by my teacher he wanted

to bring down into the best job and he

saw that that it is necessary for the

Dharma to survive or to get stronger it

was also a little bit on preparing down

and he could see that and he made really

change about poisons boosie Lunada was

this boozy llenando was in that council

and he was the chief editor for so many

things it's just amazing and he was

young he was only in 27 or 28 inches not

really my mom has decided oh yeah it was

here in 76 doesn't mean when did the two

traditions play at the 2nd Buddhist

council into tradition split because

there was a an are a hot monk that went

to this town and he saw a monk standing

outside of a shop accepting money into

his bowl and they took exception at that

so they decided to have a Buddhist

counsel and discussed whether it was

time to change some of the roles of

monks or not and they came up with the

reasoning that it was good enough during

the time of the Buddha we don't need to

change them up their rules now and those

monks that had been accepting the money

they took exception to that and they

split off and they called themselves the

Maha sangee cos and they took the the

suit does and they started taking him

changing the order of the suit death and

they started adding little things in to

the suit us and it got so in a short

period of time you couldn't tell that

they were quite the same and saying

souta's but still all of this was done

by recitation not by writing it down and

it got to be such a big split that some

of the monks decided they didn't want to

be in northern India anymore and they

went down into southern India and the

monks that that later turned into the

Mahayana monks they stayed in northern

northern India and then over the years

they started moving up into China and

things got changed around quite a bit

then when but the actual maha llanes

didn't come into being until about seven

hundred years after the time of the

Buddha the maha Sangeeta's kind of died

out and then there was other traditions

that started and they kind of died out

and then the

iono took over and that was mostly by

Nagarjuna because of his in floods that

the Maya flourished when did they do it

in seven straight instead of Holly there

was always a push to put it into

Sanskrit Lucille Ananda was not only a

Pali scholar he was a sanskrit scholar

and he said that you could take some of

the Sanskrit some of the citizen

Sanskrit and the understanding was

excellent but to try to change that into

poly it started changing things a little

bit made it difficult so he recommended

that when I first went to him that I

learned not only poly but Sanskrit so

you can compare it for yourself I wish I

had a mind like his so I could do that

anyway the second Buddhist council was

about a hundred years

put his pen one minute first time I

wrote it down the fourth for this

council that was in Sri Lanka the third

Buddhist council occurred because there

were so many Brahmins that were taking

the robes and just putting them on so

that they could be supported because the

Emperor Asoka became a Buddhist and he

supported the Buddhist monk so lavishly

that everybody wanted to get in on it so

they were taking robes and just putting

them on without becoming months and

after a few years they started noticing

that the monks were not doing the potty

mocha the residing in the new moon and

full note of all of the rules of the

monks so ahsoka asked one of his guys to

go and find out why and they asked the

monk why they weren't doing the potty

mocha and the monk told them we don't

recite the potty mocha because the

Sangha is impure and this official

threatened them that you will do the

potty mocha or we will kill you and they

still would not do the potty mapa so

they killed a few monks and word got

back to King ahsoka and that really got

him frightened and he started figuring

out that there's all of these people

that are claiming to be monks but

they're not so we have to have a

Buddhist counsel to figure out exactly

what a monk is again and to question all

of the monks to see whether they really

knew what the

his teaching was or not so they they

devised some questions and they asked

all the monks and if they couldn't

answer about the four noble truths or

some of the other things than they were

disrupt and during that Buddha's counsel

that is when they state added the aveda

and they were reading about the third

Buddha's Council is very fascinating

reading although rather dry about the

philosophical things and how they

changed it to be more like the subasta

bottoms idea of Buddhism there's lots of

different sects of Buddhism and that

happened from the first Buddhist council

because one monk and arruda they gave to

him he said we want all of your monks to

memorize the end go to Nekyia and then

they took another monk and he said we

want all of your monks to memorize the

middle link sayings and they took

another one said you have to memorize

all of the lungs long discourses and

that caused kind of a separation and

they turned in two different sets of

Buddhism because of that and at one time

there was seventeen different splits and

over the period of time and started

being less and less splits and now

there's

yeah i would say probably a worldwide

there's probably 25 or 30 different

seconds there's a set in india that is

devoted to David oughtta and they call

themselves but his moms well I wish

talked cuz you know we were going to go

to Japan and thought we were going to

you know I wanted to know something

about what was going on there because we

were going to this one sect to do the

world Buddhist council stuff and so I go

[ __ ] I Japan there were 11 sets of Zen

that we're going on there in different

sects in primary sex in japan it's

fascinating and then you know that's not

a big place you know when you think

about japan and there's a lemon

different things going on there anyway

what kind of person has one attained to

attain to view here's a person does not

contact with the body and abide in those

Liberation's that are peaceful and

immaterial transcending forms but some

of his taints are destroyed by saying

with wisdom and he has reviewed and

examined with wisdom the teachings

proclaimed by the Fatah gotta this is a

person this kind of person is called one

attain to view I say such Emma that he

still has work to do with diligence why

is that because when that

he needs to see the fruit of the

diligence for a book that I say he still

has work to do now this is talking about

monks that don't practice meditation but

they become sakata goggies through their

understanding of the surface you can be

vomit soccer the gummy by listening to

suit us for instance anathapindika the

chief supporter of the the Buddha he was

a soda Ponte his daughter she she got

sick and died and right before she died

she started calling an event and nika

younger brother and this really shook up

anathapindika and he thought she was

going crazy and he went to the Buddha

and said what Rome was she born in what

what kind of attainments who did she out

because she was very devout and helping

in all that sort of thing and the Buddha

said well she listened to the Dhamma and

she became a socket ago me and she was

calling you younger brother because she

was at a stage that's just a one-time

returner to the human realm before

attaining Nevada parody mana

this is something that has been

misunderstood for quite a while

especially with people that are

practicing with mahadji say Dada they

all think that you have the only way you

can attain nirvana is through the

meditation and it didn't happen for

Mogollon up or sorry puta they heard one

verse and they became so dependable and

it didn't happen for be Sokka the chief

emailed supporter she was 8 years old

and heard the Buddha give a discourse

and became a thought about it and it

didn't happen for many many people all

they did their understanding was such

that they could understand the deep

meaning of the dumb and become a week

not too high stages you can't it can't

happen for an autonomy or in parma they

still have a little bit of practice in

to do now what is this what does this

say about some people during the time of

the Buddha they were ascetics they

practice deep concentration they had

magnificent concentration and they would

come to the Buddha and listen to his

dhamma talk and then it always says that

they became an are hot then but what

happened is they already had the

concentration they had the stillness all

I needed

was get a little bit of understanding

and then apply that understanding to

their concentration and even while

they're listening to the Buddha talk

they started basically sick sorry Indian

wholesome States let go bringing up

wholesome states they because of the

purity of mind from having the deep

concentration they were able to attain

our hardship now there's there's a story

about the men Yassa who he had a very

wealthy families his parents were very

very wealthy and he was pampered his

whole life and he always had musicians

around and dancers and people to party

with and one day he woke up when they

had all just laid down where they were

in their snoring and their grueling and

these kind of things and he became

disgusted and he started walking out of

the the pallets thinking where is the

end to the suffering there's something

other than this it's got to be more than

this and he happened to walk across or

come across the Buddha and the Buddha he

asked the Buddha that question where is

the end of the suffering and the Buddha

said sit down and I'll give you a dumb

and talk and he gave him a dama talk and

he started applying that and he became a

soda pond

straight away his father started missing

Yassa and he went out and started

looking for and he happened to go in the

same way that Yassa went and he he saw

the Buddha the Buddha made a psychic

ability and made Yassa disappear to his

father we couldn't see him so the father

comes up and says have you seen my son

I'm looking for my son I miss him very

much and nabooda basically said well why

don't you sit down here and I'll teach

you the Dhamma and he sat down and he

started teaching the Dhamma and Yassa

listening to the Dhamma again started

practicing just for a short period of

time became an are hot as soon as he

became an aura the Buddha recognize that

and let go of that psychic ability so he

appeared right before his father his

father after hearing the Dhamma practice

for a very few minutes and became in a

non egami and then the wife came looking

for both the Son and the daughter and

she listened to the Dhamma and bank

became an amagami and Yassa asked the

Buddha to allow him into the Sangha and

Gaza became the sixth are hot after the

original fight he was in the next one I

don't know why I told you that story I

just like it

and those are the kind of stories you

get in now this person attained to view

would be a sack inugami with the

fruition knowledge seeing this fruit of

diligence for such a monk I say he still

has work to do what kind of person is

one liberated by faith here's some

person does not contact with the body

and abide in those Liberation's that are

peaceful and immaterial transcending

forms but some of his taints are

destroyed by his seeing with wisdom and

his faith is planted rooted and

established in the tetteh gotta this is

a person is called liberated by faith I

say such a mock still has work to do so

what we're talking about here is either

a socket egami without the fruition

knowledge or a soda ponte with the

fruition knowledge interesting the the

reason that i can go through this and

tell you these kind of things is because

of the research i did with this a mutiny

kya and how how these this is not only

talked about here's what i'm basically

getting it anyway what kind of person is

a dhama follower here's some person does

not cut

with the body and abide with the lindos

Liberation's that are peaceful and

immaterial transcending forms and his

taints are not yet destroyed by seeing

with wisdom but those teachings

proclaimed by the two Takata are

accepted by him after reflecting on them

sufficiently with wisdom this is a

person that spends time reflecting on

the Dhamma and how dependent origination

works and they have the past knowledge

this kind of person is called the Dhamma

follower I say of such a monk that he

has still has work to do with diligence

what kind of person is a faith follower

here's some person does not contact with

the body and abide in those Liberation's

that are peaceful and immaterial

transcending forms and his paints are

not yet destroyed by the seeing with

wisdom yet he has sufficient faith in

and love for the to toga furthermore he

has these qualities the faith faculty

the energy faculty the mindfulness

faculty the collectiveness faculty and

the wisdom faculty this kind of person

is called a faith follower I say of such

a month that he still has work to do

with diligence so this is a person that

is actually not a soda pond yet but

close to it and he has a lot of love not

only for the Buddha but for the Dhamma

in the Sangha and has like unshakable

faith in the Buddha Dhamma sonica

monks I do not say that final knowledge

is achieved all at once on the contrary

file knowledge is achieved by gradual

training by gradual practice by gradual

progress and how his final knowledge

achieved by gradual training gradual

practice and gradual process progress

hero one who has faith in a teacher

visit him when he visits him he pays

respect to him when he pays respect to

him he gives here when one who gives ear

hears the Dhamma having heard the Dhamma

he memorizes it he examines the meaning

of the teaching that he has memorized

when he examines their meaning he gains

reflective acceptance of those teachings

when he has gained reflective acceptance

of those teachings enthusiasm springs up

in him when enthusiasm has sprung up he

applies his will having applied his will

he scrutinizes having scrutinized he

strides resolute striving he realizes

with the body the Supreme Truth and sees

it by penetrating it with wisdom now I

don't know if you remember the second

discourse that I gave on this retreat

yes

the trap kazuto this is the same thing

as the track you supa this is the same

things that chunk that the student kept

on asking questions how does this happen

how does that happen when the Buddha

kept on going until he went through all

of this okay now he's talking he's still

talking to these two monks that are too

prideful to let go of their meal there

has not been that faith monks and there

has not been that visiting and there has

not been the paying of respect and there

has not been the giving of ear there has

not been the hearing of Dhamma and there

has not been that memorizing of Dhamma

and there has not been the examination

of the meaning there has not been a

reflective acceptance of the teachings

there has not been that enthusiasm and

there has not been that application of

will and there has not been that

scrutiny and there has not been that

striving monks you have lost your way

monks you have been practicing the wrong

way how far you a straight misguided men

from the Dhamma and the discipline now

these two monks there's an awful lot of

rules in lavinia that these monks

inspired

they were not what we would call great

monk staying around with they didn't do

any studying they SAT around eating all

the time they didn't do any practice

they thought that being being a punk was

a great life because they didn't have to

work and there are there's one set of

rules it's called a song a decisive the

last of the Sangha the sasa which is a

major rule for monks to break and it

talks about some of the things that they

did they talk about taking their robe

off and throwing it on the ground and

having a dancing girl dance on top of

the rows while they were clapping and

having fun than they were doing they did

all kinds of just really insane things

so this this is the first time the

buddha came to see them and that's why

he's really truing them out pretty

heavily because they're not what's the

sense of being a monk if you're not

going to follow the rules of the month

and you're not going to try to purify

your mind there's no sense in being a

monk if you're not going to do that bunk

there is a for free statement and when

it is recited a wise man would quickly

understand it I shall recite it to you

monks try to understand it then our will

sir who are we that we should understand

the Dhamma monks even with a teacher who

is concerned with material things and

heir to material things attached to

material things such haggling by his

disciples would not be proper if we get

this we will do it if we don't get this

we won't do it so what should be be said

when a teacher the teacher is the two

target a-- who is utterly detached from

material things monks for a faithful

disciple who is intent on fathoming the

teachers dispensation it is proper that

he conduct himself thus the Blessed One

is the teacher I am the disciple the

blessed one knows i do not know for

faithful disciple who is intent on

fathoming the teachers dispensation the

teachers dispensation is nourishing and

refreshing for a faithful disciple who

is intent on fatha me the teachers

dispensation it is proper that he

conducts himself thus willingly let only

my skin sinews and bones ramin and let

the flesh and blood dry up on my body

but my energy my but my energy shall not

be relaxed for as long as I have not

attained what can be attained by manly

strength manly energy and manly

persistence I'm sure that there would be

some real not liking of this statement

by the feminist but you get the idea of

it has to be strong faith strong energy

and strong persistence for a faithful

disciple who is intent on fathoming the

teachers dispensation one of two fruits

may be expected either final knowledge

here and now or if there's a trace of

cleaning left not return that is what

the

Blessid once said the monks were

satisfied and delighted in the Blessed

once words under two hours but we

covered a lot of different subjects on

this one so does anybody have any

question ok [ __ ] he might not return

on a gummy the second stage of our third

stage of the night not returning to a

meaningful yes the when in agony dies

from this world they are reborn in

brahmaloka and there they will attain

are a hot show and from then then when

their body fades away they will attain

parent evanna you have to be in our hot

Turk and Carla yeah see the first Age of

Enlightenment is called a soda pond you

will have no more than seven rebirths ok

you will never be reborn lower than the

human realm when you say you'd never get

any higher than soda pas de and you die

from this realm and you're reborn again

as a human being you will have you will

know for sure that you are a soda pond

and you will not break any of the

precepts for a reason so getting back to

the

because right now please be careful this

is only one more day of meditation let

go of your planning let go the rest of

size six are everything work hard please

really temple diligent so that you don't

have to do any more thanks everyone they

suffering for yourself here the speed

may the greenish at all with family all

these Kundalini may all beings share the

spirit that we have thus acquired an

acquisition of all kinds of happiness

he's an avocation birth was enough power

share this Maribel's a longer detect the

rest of sensation

you

you

this is the suit I promised you a couple

of days ago just so you know that I keep

my promises this is very interesting

because it talks about different stages

of enlightenment and that sort of thing

that sort of thing thus have I heard on

one occasion the blessed one was one

wandering in the cahsee country together

with a large sanga of monks there he

addressed amongst us the large sanga of

monks bhikkhu Bodhi got tired of read of

writing down 500 monks were traveling

within sir he said large Sangha I monks

I abstained from eating at night by

doing so I am free from illness and

affliction and I enjoy health strength

and a comfortable abiding come monks

abstain from eating at night by doing so

you two will be free from the illness

reflection and you will enjoy health

strength and a comfortable abiding now

this is this took place because after a

period of time there get to be quite a

number of our hearts and other degrees

of enlightenment and they the monks were

going out at night invited to different

peoples houses and then when they were

walking back they were starting to fall

in holes and generally harming

themselves

so the Buddha said don't eat at night

yes venerable sir they replied then as a

blessed one was wandering in stages in

the Casti country eventually a ride at

arrived at a casi town called kit Tajiri

there he lived in the cahsee town

category now on that occasion the monks

named acid g and pune pune bubs asuka

were residing and kick gurry then a

number of mounts went and told them

friends the blessed one in the sangha

monks now abstained from eating at night

by doing so they are free from illness

and affliction and they enjoy health and

strength and comfortable of ID this goes

against everything in the Western world

not eating at night when I was in

Australia I was eating just one meal a

day the noonday meal it was cold there

it was Frost was on the ground until

about eleven o'clock in the morning and

there was no problem i didn't i didn't

have any cold i didn't have any problems

at all i stayed very healthy just eating

one meal i did then it got to be

springtime and it was warm enough that

in the morning and would go out for a

walk and then i would go by where they

were fixing breakfast and sit down and

talk

with the monks and before long I was

taking a little bite of this and a

little bite of that and and I started

eating a second deal and immediately

caught a cold so as soon as i noticed

that i stopped eating and just ate one

meal a day in the cold one away very

quickly again that goes against an awful

lot of people in the western world

because they think you have to have

three meals a day and well you have to

eat breakfast that's the best meal of

the day but actually I do very nicely

without doing that although I have

slacked off in the last few years and

started eating a bagel

come friends abstain from eating at

night by doing so you two will be free

from illness in affliction and you will

enjoy health strength and comfortable

abiding when this was said the monks sog

and the other monk told those monks

friend we eat in the evening in the

morning and in the day outside the

proper time by doing so we are free from

illness and affliction and we enjoy

health strength and comfortable abiding

one of the things that you'll find when

you really start looking at the amount

of time it takes to get the food prepare

the food eat the food and digest the

food it winds up being about a

three-hour chunk of the day so if you

don't eat any in the evening like we're

not doing right now then you have a lot

more time for meditation and your mind

stays very bright and alert now the food

here is exceptional you don't get hungry

after eating the noonday meal it's the

right amount of hard food and soft food

so you would stay really healthy and you

have a lot more time to do the

meditation and you say oh that's

nonsense but you always have a mental

lag after eating and you've your mind is

dull because all your energy starts

going into digesting the food so

why should we abandon a benefit visible

here and now to pursue a benefit to be

achieved at a future time we shall eat

in the evening in the morning and in the

day outside the proper time since the

monks were unable to convince the monks

SOG in the other monk they went to the

Blessed One after paying homage to him

they sat down at one side and told him

all that had occurred adding venerable

sir since we were unable to convince the

monks SOG and his friend we have

reported this matter to the blessed one

then the blessed one addressed a certain

month us come monk tell the monks acid G

and his friend in my name that the

teacher calls them yes been herbal sir

he replied and went to the monks acid G

and his friend and told him the teacher

calls you friend yes friend near applied

and they went to the Blessed One after

paying homage to him sat down at one

side the Blessed One then said monks is

it true that when a number of months

went and told you friends the Blessed

One and the saga now abstained from

eating at night and they invited calm

friends abstained from eating at night

and you told those monks friends we eat

in the evening why should we abandon a

benefit visible here and now to pursue a

benefit to be achieved at a future time

we shall eat in the evening in the

morning and

the day outside the proper time yes bin

erable serve monks have you known me to

teach the dom on such a way as this

whatever this person experiences whether

pleasant or painful or neither painful

nor Pleasant unwholesome States diminish

in him and wholesome states increase no

venerable sir monks have you not known

me to teach the Dhamma in such a way as

this here when someone feels a certain

kind of pleasant feeling unwholesome

states increase in him and wholesome

states diminish but when someone feels

another kind of pleasant feeling

unwholesome States diminish in him and

wholesome states increase here when

someone feels a certain kind of painful

feeling unwholesome States increase in

him and wholesome states diminish but

when someone feels another kind of

painful feeling unwholesome States

diminish in him and wholesome states

increase here when someone feels a

certain kind of neither painful more

pleasant feeling unwholesome States

increase in him and wholesome States

diminish but when someone feels another

kind of neither painful or pleasant

feeling unwholesome States diminish in

him in wholesome states increase yes

venerable sir good monks if it were

unknown by me unseen unfound unrealized

uncontracted by wisdom I'm contacted by

wisdom thus here when someone feels a

certain kind of pleasant feeling

unwholesome States increase in him and

wholesome states diminish what kind of

feelings are those that unwholesome

states

increase in wholesome states diminution

of sensual pleasures sensual pleasures

and unwholesome states increased never

did that would it not be fitting for me

not knowing that to say abandon such a

kind of pleasant feeling

wholesome station

would be fitting for me not knowing that

to say abandon such kind of pleasant

feeling okay saying if if I didn't know

that certain Pleasant feelings of rose

that I wouldn't say that it's that you

should you should stop those you should

stop getting involved with those but of

course it is known by me seeing found

realized content contacted by wisdom

thus here when someone feels a certain

kind of pleasant feeling unwholesome

states increase in him and wholesome

states diminish that I therefore say

abandon such a kind of pleasant feeling

if it is unknown by me unseen unfounded

and realized I'm come contacted by

wisdom thus here when someone feels

another kind of pleasant feeling

wholesome states diminish in him and

wholesome states increase would it be

fitting for me not knowing that to say

enter upon and abide in such a wholesome

such a pleasant feeling no venerable sir

what is a kind of pleasant feeling where

unwholesome states diminish and

wholesome states increase what the

problem is that's part of the answer

that's right the drama because it is

known by me scene found realized

contacted by wisdom thus here when

someone feels another kind of pleasant

feeling unwholesome states diminishing

him and wholesome states increase that I

therefore say enter upon and abide in

such a kind of pleasant feeling here

when someone feels a certain kind of

painful feeling unwholesome states

increase in him and wholesome states

diminish is it right that I say without

knowing abandon such a kind of painful

feeling if it were unknown by me but

because it is known by me contacted by

wisdom thus here when someone feels

another kind of painful feeling

unwholesome states diminish in him and

wholesome states increase that I

therefore say enter upon and abide in

such a kind of painful feeling what kind

of painful feeling is it that arises

where unwholesome states diminish and

wholesome states increased another job

no so painful painful feeling

the hindrances and letting go of the

hindrances that's the scissors that's

the same but that indicates in a kind of

elaborate often equanimity or non

reactive and reactive pneus allowing it

rustic and oh well the air it's it's

meditation pain and that's basically the

entrances yeah and allowing the

hindrances to be without getting

involved with yeah certainly yeah and

that that is yeah and that's how the

unwholesome states become less and the

wholesome states become more because you

start letting go of the identification

with those hindrances requires a clear

strength in concentration and Parsons

yes definitely now isn't that part of

the other genre in it leads to the drama

yeah I see she's atmosphere yeah and the

reason that it leads to the jhana is

because eventually you let go of that

identification and then your mind is

wholesome it's very delightful to be to

be there to understand that as it occurs

yes difference and not that kind of

balance oh yeah cruises around or

touches people and then certainly has

the potential together

and what is that other word in opening

so suta la palma kota promoted promoting

is really you're saying gladness emoji

or four monkey I can't remember I don't

think i have no Chuck is in it your

apology okay yokomo gia and you're

always one dance but you said really

yeah that is the stage right before the

PT is is the the relief of letting go of

the unwholesome state of the Hendrix

maybe of the three Venus one day see

William is kind of when the hem rinse is

there definitely and when you let it go

relief if it were unknown by me but

because it is known contacted by wisdom

thus here when someone feels another

kind of painful feeling unwholesome

states to I've already read that if it

were unknown by me but because it is

known and contacted by wisdom thus here

when someone feels a certain kind of

neither painful nor pleasant feeling

unwholesome stapes increase in him and

wholesome states diminish now what kind

of neither painful nor pleasant feeling

causes unwholesome states to arise and

also states to diminish neither painful

and are pleasant feeling

labyrinth it definitely is a lack of

awareness and it is indifference and the

indifference is the danger of the

indifference is that you don't have

mindfulness or rides and you just kind

of push off it out I told me that so

what don't care isn't it the enemy of

equanimity yes it is it definitely is

therefore I say abandon such a kind of

neither painful nor pleasant feeling if

it were unknown by being but because it

is numb and contacted by wisdom thus

here when someone feels another kind of

neither painful or pleasant feeling

unwholesome States diminish in him and

wholesome States increase what is that

in neither painful nor pleasant feeling

unwholesome States diminish in him and

wholesome States increase it with

anything and quite often with the with

the suit as they point at the equanimity

that you feel in the fourth drama

because it talks about having neither

pain nor pleasure came on with you

please and that's the increase mandates

equanimity balance the same thing pretty

much foundation but the things the thing

is in in each one of the dramas there is

equanimity yeah it's just not as strong

as it is when it gets all the way up to

the 4th jhana and it's actually not even

mentioned very much until the third

jhana but you have equanimity in every

one of the jhanas it just keeps building

and getting stronger and stronger and

stronger

monks I do not say of all monks that

they still have work to do with

diligence now we're going to get into it

and nor do I say of all month that they

have no more work to do with diligence I

do not say to those monks who are our

odds with tanks destroyed who have lived

the holy life done what had to be done

lay down the burden reach for the reach

the true goal destroyed the fetters of

being and are completely liberated

through final knowledge that they still

have work to do with diligence why they

have done their work with diligence they

are no longer capable of being negligent

well since it's their business hard

working hard working working really hard

if you're diligent you're working very

hard night at NCI the other civil best

light working to do that's instead of

nestle workers applying or something

yeah yeah I say it such monks who are in

higher training whose minds have not yet

reached the goal and who are still

aspiring to the Supreme security from

bondage that they still have work to do

with diligence why is that because when

these venerable make such a suitable

resting place and associate with good

friends and balance their spiritual

faculties they may have realized for

themselves with direct knowledge

and now entered upon and abided in that

supreme goal of the holy life for the

sake of which clansmen rightly go forth

from the home life into the homeless

seeing this fruit of diligence for these

monks I say that they still have they

still have work to do with diligence now

this is talking about someone who has

had the path knowledge of para hot chip

but they have not reached the fruition

of our hardship yet what you'll be fine

miss me oh yeah so so the Buddha says

you still have more work to do you still

have to it not much just get into the

fruition and you got it big guy you know

that's kind of it that's all interesting

phrase in here about balance the

spiritual faculties yes so you define

the fact i'm always looking for this you

define each one of the faculties the

five then when you get them into balance

and they're all the time there they

become the powers right of course ok

let's see what you saw more germane

children 14 doesn't that also contribute

to the may truly people and gets off of

joy

well but it's more than joy since the

it's the 707 enlightenment factors in

balance and they're talking about the

spiritual faculties that that is your

your faith and energy and mindfulness

collectiveness and no onion wisdom the

five faculty is just okay well yeah

that's confidence let's see the way the

way that I teach the five faculties is I

actually teach six because first there

has to be curiosity and then you work

and you see that the practice starts to

work and you gain real confidence as

your confidence improves the amount of

energy you put into your practice starts

to take hold when your energy is good

your mindfulness gets very sharp with

the mindfulness your mind becomes very

collected and clear and that leads to

wisdom seeing dependent origination fee

so my five faculties are actually six

faculties because they throw in

curiosity is kind of rude the bonus was

investigation oh well yeah yeah it does

what does any curiosity yeah what you

hold on to hear you have to be curious

first before you investigate my all

right cuz investigation is a is a sort

of swell by step thing

you know your investigation oh yes I

just I know you do invest and then cool

cool become stronger before I don't use

some depth about cost of eating or

healing and then this something well

that's mom to my way of thinking that's

more practice yeah see the thing you

always keep in mind is that the Buddha

was a meditator and when he was teaching

everything he was teaching was in the

framework of meditation so when we

understand words then we have to back up

and say he was a meditator selling the

mind of the meditator what does it mean

every single time it gets really

interesting when you start doing that to

suit us especially the Eightfold Path

because that there's an awful lot of

definitions of the fold path and now

they'll say even in in this book they

will say the Eightfold Path well yeah

you got to practice it but you're

already practicing morality so you don't

have to look at right right speech right

action and right livelihood so that

immediately takes the Eightfold Path and

makes it a five fold path and then they

say the concentration well it says that

concentration is our right concentration

is getting into all of the dramas but

that also includes access concentration

and moment to moment concentration so

what you're doing is basically taking

right concentration and not following

what it says in the suit that's so you

have a four fold path I got in a big

argument last summer

with someone in purple we won't name

when I started saying that i really

don't agree with taking these three

factors of right speech right action and

my livelihood out of the Eightfold Path

because they are part of the practice

and that's what it said in the suit tub

and then I told them I don't agree with

that and then our resident Pali scholar

after listening to everything he SAT

back and he started thinking about it

and he started laughing because he said

this argument has been going on for two

thousand years and what it is it's the

argument between monks that do the

meditation practice and the scholar

monks the scholar monks they want to

take these three out because they say

you're already doing it and the

practicing monk say no you can't take

any of that up because you're constantly

using it was so with when he laughed and

agreed with me I got to laugh I wasn't

really agreeing with that I was looking

at the possibility of it well picking

hairs here yeah well monks there are

seven kinds of persons to be found

existing in the world what seven they

are one liberated in both ways to be

liberated in both ways means that you

experienced the four Gianna's you

experience the for aruba jonna's and you

see dependent

that's being liberated in both ways now

you have one liberated by wisdom and

that's someone that doesn't go through

all of the aruba dramas but they still

see the dependent origination then we

have a body witness and the body witness

is someone that gets to the stage of a

Nagomi and we'll go through these with

the suit is in a minute one who has

attained to view the one who has

attained to view is a socket agami

that's the second stage of enlightenment

of awakening excuse me I just got to

talk to somebody about don't use the

word enlightened one liberated by faith

this is a person that hears the Dhamma

they understand the Dhamma and they

become a stream inter with the fruition

then we have a dama follower this is

someone that practices meditation and

they become a stream in true but they

don't have the path knowledge I mean the

the fruition knowledge and a faith

follower a faith follower is someone who

hears the Dhamma and they have the path

knowledge but they haven't gotten the

fruition knowledge yet can you say

something about portion i will in just a

minute okay oh yeah derma follower

somebody that practice met

asian entertained the first stage of

enlightenment without first first stage

of awakening without having the fruition

okay what kind of person is one

liberated in both ways here's some

person contacts with the body and abides

in those Liberation's that are peaceful

and immaterial now the contact with the

body is talking about the breathing

meditation and it's also talking about

the brahma vihara transcending forms and

his tanks are destroyed by his seeing

with wisdom seeing with wisdom is always

same dependent origination this kind of

person is called one liberated in both

ways so they have all of the jhanas and

they see with the dependent origination

I do not say of such a monk that he

still has work to do with diligence why

is that he has done his work with

diligence he is no more capable of being

negligent that means that he doesn't

have any ignorance arise in him ever

again he doesn't have any anger arises

in him ever again he doesn't have any

lust arise in him ever again he sees

everything as an impersonal process that

arises and

away is got an incredibly brilliant mind

this is the advantage of becoming an AA

raha I could did you gon call me beat

what kind of person is one liberated by

wisdom here some person does not contact

with the body and abide in those

Liberation's that are peaceful and in

material transcending forms but his

taints are destroyed by a seeing with

wisdom now that's always saying

dependent origination but it would be

someone that has one of the jhanas and

all of a sudden they're mine is ready

and the cessation of perception and

feeling occurs and then they see

dependent origination and then they

attain nirvana

now and this is a person that not only

has attained a bond that has also gotten

fruition now venerable sariputta and

venerable mogul Lana the first and

second Chief disciples they both

practice mindfulness of breathing they

both went through all of the jhanas and

in material jonna's and attain nirvana

be screaming with the breathing

meditation at laser vapor don't change

what it is my my biggest thing in this

country is that there are so many people

practicing mindfulness of breathing not

following the Buddha's instructions yeah

and it takes them someplace else

completely to an a.1 pointed absorption

kind of meditation I have done that

myself I could project myself easy into

every place around to especially at the

canyon lakes' with the waves and water

and it could right there and over there

was that movie that I was standing very

scary and then somebody comes in and

grab raid or walks through that

connection it's a secure connection then

you are out of luck to return there are

certain kind of energies that you have

to be very careful with especially the

one point it kind of Oh kind of

concentration because there can be there

can be so many different things that can

arise you start getting a ringing in

your ears all the time you get tricky

small to see yeah yeah yeah yeah it'll

make me a stiff like like a board like a

board did he get the mind was somewhere

a dependent deflating only thanks to my

husband who understood these things and

you had to write some whatever and he

helped me out of it that finished my

experimentation ya gotta be did you

sleep in without knowing that was kind

of what you are seeing with our

knowledge without realizing the fruition

and the different levels and stay down

to others yeah but there's a the reason

that I pushed the loving-kindness

meditation so much is because everybody

if I tell them practice the way the

Buddha teaches they would do it at first

and then they would slip back into their

old habit of

meditation and when we change the object

of meditation now they have to start

over again but their progress is fast

it's just that you need to have a kind

of meditation where you don't have these

old habits that you fall into their way

you ain't get yourself yes gentlemen

always falling back into medication of

meta and she was Kendall impressive

schizophrenic or something this is

country she came and deeper years but

the meta head she would count in 35

times to sing sentence on that primitive

level but it brought her back well if we

have that extra step of relaxing is

coming back happens much faster for she

was really hard working to be able to do

that if she had had with sensory

awareness practices and kind of emotion

to other ways it can become angry yeah

I've had some some students that I've

told I don't want you to meditate I tell

them that they have to practice smiling

in the apt approach yeah saying thanks

to other people that are very kind and

you have to practice helping other

people because the practice of

meditation is not just sitting sit city

yes it's not just sitting and looking

like the Buddha image there the practice

of meditation is all the time and it

includes practicing your generosity and

I tell the students very clearly that

they have to practice smiling so they

can get this mile away and you have to

keep your five precepts that is a basis

for having at their mind when you keep

the Five Precepts very closely it is a

general kind of mindfulness that has to

be developed so that when you're ready

to do the sitting meditation you're

sitting meditation progresses very

quickly but one of the problems I'm

seeing in this country is you go to a

retreat and they have you take the five

precepts in poly one time for the

retreat and nobody really knows and then

when they get off retreat they say well

that was that part of my life now I'm

going to go back and be the way I was

and there's no personality development

so when they come for the retreat the

next time

take some five to seven days to calm

down before they can actually start

doing the retrieval but you've seen on

this retreat for yourselves how fast you

get into the meditation when you keep

the Five Precepts it's very important

we've had something to do with our

mentality getting at it and getting to

their higher leather or whatever in

ideal so they forget about settling and

into deeper understanding and of the

expansion and the power of the presets

and then it is basically a kind of an

illusion anyway it is the old-fashioned

and it is bad and so I thank you to the

Christians for that one time thanks for

the Christians for that one yeah they

want everybody to break the precepts so

they can feel guilty yeah and then they

have to go to the church to get

abstained from that guilt we already

have sinned so what's the big deal they

have to be done very very slowly these

presents I see them as a kind of an

offering of peace and themselves instead

of Commandments it ever get away from

that I had a funny thing happened in

Malaysia one Chinese man said okay okay

I'm convinced I'll keep the precepts how

long do I have to do it I told him well

we can start it

years and go up from there okay what

kind of person is a body witness here's

some person contacts with contacts with

the body and abides in those

Liberation's that are peaceful in a

material transcending form and some of

the states are destroyed by seeing with

wisdom this implies that there you get

up to be an auto Ghani some of your

tanks are destroyed not all of them the

first five taints are destroyed and they

are doubt belief that rites and rituals

lead to awakening a belief in a personal

self lust and hatred that it's

definitely a worthwhile thing I mean

think about it no hatred no aversion

ever rising in your mind again even if

you try to get angry or mind would laugh

at you and saying go we're not going to

play that game that's really truly a

wonderful accomplishment to have

something like that occur and the reason

that only part of the taints are

destroyed is because there is some

slight attachment to the craving and

blinging it's light but it's still there

for what

saving and cleaning well you'd have to

ask them but they still have their mind

gets very pure and they'll they'll

experience Nibhana but there's still a

slight clinging to things still a slight

bit of craving this they're expressing

education well at that point you

wouldn't have any irritation but you

still would have you would have pride

you still have some desires for getting

to higher realms you still have a little

bit of ignorance you still would have a

slight bit of restlessness and you would

still have a slight bit of sloth and

torpor but not slot that's more like

that your mind is dulls out a little bit

someday it's not as sharp as it could be

those are the five fetters that when you

get to be an AA raha donor right they're

gone no

but this is a person a person that has

gotten abides in those Liberation's that

are peaceful and in materials so they're

talking about getting through all of the

jhanas and transcending form and some of

the taints are destroyed by seeing with

wisdom this kind of person is called a

body witness and again the body

witnesses someone is doing the

mindfulness of breathing and the Brahma

viharas will take you to and actually

the breathing meditation meditation

takes you to the realm of nothingness

and then mind becomes so subtle that you

can't tell whether it's really there or

not so you don't see the aggregates you

don't see the the breath at all you

don't see any of the brahma vihara

anymore your mind becomes exceptionally

bright and clear and very lucid I think

that's a good word for it and you will

be in this state for a period of time

that's neither perception nor not

perception and when you come out then

you reflect on what happened while you

were in that state and while you're

reflecting about what happened in that

state you're sick saarang it with this

your 6r4 the thing right beside you

relax for a smile return and continue

what was it resume resume / 10 to resume

Oh what he was there when we started

this he said because I know yeah why do

you say he's mine you're supposed to be

but is he lost you smile well because

you have a tendency to let it go and

this is just it's a way of keeping mind

light alert and imbalance and I had

someone scold me by email telling me

that the Buddha never taught us to smile

he taught us to be happy not ever to

smile and what could I say none of the

symptoms I've ever run across directly

tell you to smile meeting that is

included in joy or in your course and it

doesn't exist it that word doesn't exist

but the feeling of it certainly does

yeah well we put it on statue you

remember it for some reason didn't they

it's like in that smile that's not

always to be on a mouse well when you

look at the Buddha images the ones that

are really good they always have this

room a little smile on their face and

that's that's the artist telling us the

Buddha had joy and sometimes you see the

the eyes are half open and i've had i've

gone to people that tried to tell me you

should sit with your high

open all the time but that is a

manifestation of the all-pervading joy

you'll be sitting in orders and your

eyes open they don't open wide but they

open and you close them and they open by

themselves so okay let them be but

that's just one of the things that

happens and that's what the artist that

does the Buddha image is trying to show

that there is this all-pervading joy

I say of such a monk this that he still

has work to do with diligence why is

that because when that venerable one

makes use of a suitable resting places

and associates with good friends and

balances and spiritual faculties he may

by realizing for himself with direct

knowledge here and now enter upon and

abide in that supreme goal of the holy

life for the sake of which clansmen

rightly go forth from the home life into

the homeless seeing this fruit of

diligence for such rama I'd say he still

has work to do so any and actually you

can say even the person that has

attained our hot ship and not had the

fruit he still has work to do there's no

real personality change until the

fruition occurs and during the time of

the Buddha there were people that were

walking around that were not on the path

but without the fruition now how does

the fruition occur the fruition occurs

at sometimes it can occur very closely

like sorry boots I started talking about

Ian mogul Anna when Sri butta how he

attained nirvana was he did a lot of

sitting and he's been about two weeks

going through all of these jonna's and

all of that and he still had one slight

attachment and well he was he was

standing behind the

Fanning the Buddha wala bhutta was

giving a dominant talk and it occurred

to sorry puta that the Buddha was not

even attached to the Dhamma and as soon

as he realized that he let go of that

little tiny teeny attachment and he

became an are hot while he was Fanning

and he became he had the path knowledge

and the fruition knowledge happened very

closely together and he became the RI

but even that little tiny thought of I

really like this Dhamma I want to see

more that little tiny attachment was a

thing that stopped him from attaining

the ivana now the fruition can occur

really fast depending on the conditions

of your ear practice or it can happen at

some time in the future it might be next

week it might be next month it might be

next year it might be five years from

now who knows but what happens when you

first experience a bona you see

dependent origination and you see the

cessation of dependent origination you

don't really know what state you're in

until you do attain the fruition now

let's say next week after you have the

experience of Nevada right now that's

that's the opening you're destined to

have the fruition arise at some point as

long as you take care to watch what you

do with the sense pleasures

and that sort of thing and you're

cleaning the house or washing the dishes

or doing whatever you do and all of a

sudden your mind starts to get really

deep and you think I'd better sit down

for this so you sit down and you start

watching and that Nibhana occurs again

and if you're a soda pas de you will see

the fruition and the fruition is seeing

dependent origination arise and then

pass away one time if you're a sock

tegami you will see it a rise and pass

away two types if you're an auto gani

you will see it arise and pass away

three times and if you're a are a hot

you will see the fruition arise and pass

away four times and right after that

there is

the biggest happiness that arises that

you could imagine they're so every cell

in your body rejoices and that

understanding from seeing dependent

origination four times is so strong that

there is definite personality

development now you have the experience

of Nirvana happen right now and you can

come to me and say I had that experience

and I say good who sits some more and

that's the last thing you want to do but

if you can sit and six are even this

powerful feeling of joy and you feel

like dancing and you feel like flying

and you feel like doing anything other

than sitting but if you can do it you

can have the fruition occur a little bit

work with me with that knowledge I

thought you see the arising and passing

away of I mean though the forward and

backward of different energy yes so then

you see it again with food fruition now

you see it again with preferred

knowledge depending on the stage that

that you have a tape right by how many

times you would see it it's not what is

the next one right after that happens

fast so what and causes for wishing I

think well it's it's good your mind

needed to take a rest for a little while

that you keep on with your

just being very mindful of your sense

doors and that sort of thing you keep

purifying your mind you keep six rning

everything and then when that's done

enough it will arise again I had one

student in Asia that she had the

experience and then she called me up

like two days later and she said I just

had the experience again and I saw this

happen two types and then she called up

I think it was the next day and she said

I just had that experience again and it

happened three times hmm and I said oh

good continue and it never happened

again so she became a nonagon and when

that happened that gave me the

opportunity to leave Asia and come back

to this country because I had left a

teacher there she could teach anybody

with the meditation because she

understood it so thoroughly I have a lot

of people that asked me if I give a

course for teachers and it's the same

course for everybody and I would not

consider calling anyone a teacher until

they have the experience of the fruition

of

the experience and experience of the

bottom yes so if a person has the

fruition of a soda paana and that person

continues to work then and if the person

if the conditions are right that person

can progress oh you and then the

sittings worry or you do see the

dependent origination are the relations

you don't have to go through path

knowledge so you will go through

pathology yet again yeah okay but again

you don't know what's going to happen

until you get to the fruition knowledge

you don't know if you got to the second

stage or the third stage or the fourth

state it depends on the fruition

knowledge itself so that's the

determining factor that's the

determining factor well the in the case

of the person that you describe the

fruit is she had several fruition zochor

one after another but in between she

also had the occurrence of path

knowledge again really why'd you

elaborate on the Croatian is more well

the fruition of seeing dependent

origination the arising of it and the

cessation of it and when you see it so

closely together with two times or three

times or four times it affects your

understanding of dependent origination

so that you have the deep realization

it's a kind

understanding because of that you know

this closeness and you see it on the

horizontal level I'm innocent I don't

know how to you see to make well this is

not simultaneous you see one right after

the other but they happen very fast but

your mind is so lucid at that time yeah

that there is deep understanding and

it's like you see it the first time and

there's the understanding and you see it

again right then oh now I see it and

then you see it again oh and then

there's the complete understanding when

you become an hour

I keep on time maybe one of these days

I'll add that to my book I've been

talking about that for 18 years now oh

you wrote an awful lot of material on

the fruition then he crashed his

computer lost everything and hadn't

backed it up hmm I had 50 50 pages

written 40 pages something like that and

it was really good and I've gone to all

these different souta's and I was

pulling out the citizen saying see this

is what it says here this is how it

works and then it all went disappeared

but now he has an external hard drive to

play with so yeah well I have to get in

the mood for going back and doing all

that research again not easy right I'm

kind of waiting to be honest be windy &

goo training kiya comes out I'm Anka

with bated breath I'm waiting for that

because it's there's there's a lot of

information on how dependent origination

works in that and a lot of the things

from the ANBU trainee kya first were

brought into the Hobby demo that's how

the Alabama got started it took a lot of

the things that we're talking about

dependent origination they started avi

dama and started adding to the

understanding of the

an origination and then over the years

it started going in other directions

that's what happened at the third

Buddhist council they introduced the

abhidhamma so that there would be a

clear understanding of how dependent

origination actually does work there are

only five concerts in Cebu dizer truth

well it depends what country are talking

about I talked about the Burma thats it

was 52 yeah that was the sixth I was

little bit after then yeah those complex

and fifteen thousand monks came from all

over the world yeah comparing the sutras

different countries and it was from my

teacher who initiated it oh good don't

worry of Dallas I didn't know that

painting ago yeah so that was the sixth

one sixth buddhist council the fifth is

when they they met in the 1800s i think

and they put the entire to pit Akkad

they put it in marble and they put gold

in the carved out letters and that was

there for a little while before somebody

started coming picking out gold but is

it true that they like the mahayana and

state every time the terracotta had a

council than the Maya

counsel do one on one thing no no it

takes an amazing amount of effort so

again put a council on and they really

have the mumps that come to it they have

to feel that it's really necessary right

now to do that Doctor Who complex your

ears and for accommodation and for three

years they were working fifteen thousand

monks yeah I see any my issue of

necessity at that time was kind of

forged forward by my teacher he wanted

to bring down into the best job and he

saw that that it is necessary for the

Dharma to survive or to get stronger it

was also a little bit on preparing down

and he could see that and he made really

change about poisons boosie Lunada was

this boozy llenando was in that council

and he was the chief editor for so many

things it's just amazing and he was

young he was only in 27 or 28 inches not

really my mom has decided oh yeah it was

here in 76 doesn't mean when did the two

traditions play at the 2nd Buddhist

council into tradition split because

there was a an are a hot monk that went

to this town and he saw a monk standing

outside of a shop accepting money into

his bowl and they took exception at that

so they decided to have a Buddhist

counsel and discussed whether it was

time to change some of the roles of

monks or not and they came up with the

reasoning that it was good enough during

the time of the Buddha we don't need to

change them up their rules now and those

monks that had been accepting the money

they took exception to that and they

split off and they called themselves the

Maha sangee cos and they took the the

suit does and they started taking him

changing the order of the suit death and

they started adding little things in to

the suit us and it got so in a short

period of time you couldn't tell that

they were quite the same and saying

souta's but still all of this was done

by recitation not by writing it down and

it got to be such a big split that some

of the monks decided they didn't want to

be in northern India anymore and they

went down into southern India and the

monks that that later turned into the

Mahayana monks they stayed in northern

northern India and then over the years

they started moving up into China and

things got changed around quite a bit

then when but the actual maha llanes

didn't come into being until about seven

hundred years after the time of the

Buddha the maha Sangeeta's kind of died

out and then there was other traditions

that started and they kind of died out

and then the

iono took over and that was mostly by

Nagarjuna because of his in floods that

the Maya flourished when did they do it

in seven straight instead of Holly there

was always a push to put it into

Sanskrit Lucille Ananda was not only a

Pali scholar he was a sanskrit scholar

and he said that you could take some of

the Sanskrit some of the citizen

Sanskrit and the understanding was

excellent but to try to change that into

poly it started changing things a little

bit made it difficult so he recommended

that when I first went to him that I

learned not only poly but Sanskrit so

you can compare it for yourself I wish I

had a mind like his so I could do that

anyway the second Buddhist council was

about a hundred years

put his pen one minute first time I

wrote it down the fourth for this

council that was in Sri Lanka the third

Buddhist council occurred because there

were so many Brahmins that were taking

the robes and just putting them on so

that they could be supported because the

Emperor Asoka became a Buddhist and he

supported the Buddhist monk so lavishly

that everybody wanted to get in on it so

they were taking robes and just putting

them on without becoming months and

after a few years they started noticing

that the monks were not doing the potty

mocha the residing in the new moon and

full note of all of the rules of the

monks so ahsoka asked one of his guys to

go and find out why and they asked the

monk why they weren't doing the potty

mocha and the monk told them we don't

recite the potty mocha because the

Sangha is impure and this official

threatened them that you will do the

potty mocha or we will kill you and they

still would not do the potty mapa so

they killed a few monks and word got

back to King ahsoka and that really got

him frightened and he started figuring

out that there's all of these people

that are claiming to be monks but

they're not so we have to have a

Buddhist counsel to figure out exactly

what a monk is again and to question all

of the monks to see whether they really

knew what the

his teaching was or not so they they

devised some questions and they asked

all the monks and if they couldn't

answer about the four noble truths or

some of the other things than they were

disrupt and during that Buddha's counsel

that is when they state added the aveda

and they were reading about the third

Buddha's Council is very fascinating

reading although rather dry about the

philosophical things and how they

changed it to be more like the subasta

bottoms idea of Buddhism there's lots of

different sects of Buddhism and that

happened from the first Buddhist council

because one monk and arruda they gave to

him he said we want all of your monks to

memorize the end go to Nekyia and then

they took another monk and he said we

want all of your monks to memorize the

middle link sayings and they took

another one said you have to memorize

all of the lungs long discourses and

that caused kind of a separation and

they turned in two different sets of

Buddhism because of that and at one time

there was seventeen different splits and

over the period of time and started

being less and less splits and now

there's

yeah i would say probably a worldwide

there's probably 25 or 30 different

seconds there's a set in india that is

devoted to David oughtta and they call

themselves but his moms well I wish

talked cuz you know we were going to go

to Japan and thought we were going to

you know I wanted to know something

about what was going on there because we

were going to this one sect to do the

world Buddhist council stuff and so I go

[ __ ] I Japan there were 11 sets of Zen

that we're going on there in different

sects in primary sex in japan it's

fascinating and then you know that's not

a big place you know when you think

about japan and there's a lemon

different things going on there anyway

what kind of person has one attained to

attain to view here's a person does not

contact with the body and abide in those

Liberation's that are peaceful and

immaterial transcending forms but some

of his taints are destroyed by saying

with wisdom and he has reviewed and

examined with wisdom the teachings

proclaimed by the Fatah gotta this is a

person this kind of person is called one

attain to view I say such Emma that he

still has work to do with diligence why

is that because when that

he needs to see the fruit of the

diligence for a book that I say he still

has work to do now this is talking about

monks that don't practice meditation but

they become sakata goggies through their

understanding of the surface you can be

vomit soccer the gummy by listening to

suit us for instance anathapindika the

chief supporter of the the Buddha he was

a soda Ponte his daughter she she got

sick and died and right before she died

she started calling an event and nika

younger brother and this really shook up

anathapindika and he thought she was

going crazy and he went to the Buddha

and said what Rome was she born in what

what kind of attainments who did she out

because she was very devout and helping

in all that sort of thing and the Buddha

said well she listened to the Dhamma and

she became a socket ago me and she was

calling you younger brother because she

was at a stage that's just a one-time

returner to the human realm before

attaining Nevada parody mana

this is something that has been

misunderstood for quite a while

especially with people that are

practicing with mahadji say Dada they

all think that you have the only way you

can attain nirvana is through the

meditation and it didn't happen for

Mogollon up or sorry puta they heard one

verse and they became so dependable and

it didn't happen for be Sokka the chief

emailed supporter she was 8 years old

and heard the Buddha give a discourse

and became a thought about it and it

didn't happen for many many people all

they did their understanding was such

that they could understand the deep

meaning of the dumb and become a week

not too high stages you can't it can't

happen for an autonomy or in parma they

still have a little bit of practice in

to do now what is this what does this

say about some people during the time of

the Buddha they were ascetics they

practice deep concentration they had

magnificent concentration and they would

come to the Buddha and listen to his

dhamma talk and then it always says that

they became an are hot then but what

happened is they already had the

concentration they had the stillness all

I needed

was get a little bit of understanding

and then apply that understanding to

their concentration and even while

they're listening to the Buddha talk

they started basically sick sorry Indian

wholesome States let go bringing up

wholesome states they because of the

purity of mind from having the deep

concentration they were able to attain

our hardship now there's there's a story

about the men Yassa who he had a very

wealthy families his parents were very

very wealthy and he was pampered his

whole life and he always had musicians

around and dancers and people to party

with and one day he woke up when they

had all just laid down where they were

in their snoring and their grueling and

these kind of things and he became

disgusted and he started walking out of

the the pallets thinking where is the

end to the suffering there's something

other than this it's got to be more than

this and he happened to walk across or

come across the Buddha and the Buddha he

asked the Buddha that question where is

the end of the suffering and the Buddha

said sit down and I'll give you a dumb

and talk and he gave him a dama talk and

he started applying that and he became a

soda pond

straight away his father started missing

Yassa and he went out and started

looking for and he happened to go in the

same way that Yassa went and he he saw

the Buddha the Buddha made a psychic

ability and made Yassa disappear to his

father we couldn't see him so the father

comes up and says have you seen my son

I'm looking for my son I miss him very

much and nabooda basically said well why

don't you sit down here and I'll teach

you the Dhamma and he sat down and he

started teaching the Dhamma and Yassa

listening to the Dhamma again started

practicing just for a short period of

time became an are hot as soon as he

became an aura the Buddha recognize that

and let go of that psychic ability so he

appeared right before his father his

father after hearing the Dhamma practice

for a very few minutes and became in a

non egami and then the wife came looking

for both the Son and the daughter and

she listened to the Dhamma and bank

became an amagami and Yassa asked the

Buddha to allow him into the Sangha and

Gaza became the sixth are hot after the

original fight he was in the next one I

don't know why I told you that story I

just like it

and those are the kind of stories you

get in now this person attained to view

would be a sack inugami with the

fruition knowledge seeing this fruit of

diligence for such a monk I say he still

has work to do what kind of person is

one liberated by faith here's some

person does not contact with the body

and abide in those Liberation's that are

peaceful and immaterial transcending

forms but some of his taints are

destroyed by his seeing with wisdom and

his faith is planted rooted and

established in the tetteh gotta this is

a person is called liberated by faith I

say such a mock still has work to do so

what we're talking about here is either

a socket egami without the fruition

knowledge or a soda ponte with the

fruition knowledge interesting the the

reason that i can go through this and

tell you these kind of things is because

of the research i did with this a mutiny

kya and how how these this is not only

talked about here's what i'm basically

getting it anyway what kind of person is

a dhama follower here's some person does

not cut

with the body and abide with the lindos

Liberation's that are peaceful and

immaterial transcending forms and his

taints are not yet destroyed by seeing

with wisdom but those teachings

proclaimed by the two Takata are

accepted by him after reflecting on them

sufficiently with wisdom this is a

person that spends time reflecting on

the Dhamma and how dependent origination

works and they have the past knowledge

this kind of person is called the Dhamma

follower I say of such a monk that he

has still has work to do with diligence

what kind of person is a faith follower

here's some person does not contact with

the body and abide in those Liberation's

that are peaceful and immaterial

transcending forms and his paints are

not yet destroyed by the seeing with

wisdom yet he has sufficient faith in

and love for the to toga furthermore he

has these qualities the faith faculty

the energy faculty the mindfulness

faculty the collectiveness faculty and

the wisdom faculty this kind of person

is called a faith follower I say of such

a month that he still has work to do

with diligence so this is a person that

is actually not a soda pond yet but

close to it and he has a lot of love not

only for the Buddha but for the Dhamma

in the Sangha and has like unshakable

faith in the Buddha Dhamma sonica

monks I do not say that final knowledge

is achieved all at once on the contrary

file knowledge is achieved by gradual

training by gradual practice by gradual

progress and how his final knowledge

achieved by gradual training gradual

practice and gradual process progress

hero one who has faith in a teacher

visit him when he visits him he pays

respect to him when he pays respect to

him he gives here when one who gives ear

hears the Dhamma having heard the Dhamma

he memorizes it he examines the meaning

of the teaching that he has memorized

when he examines their meaning he gains

reflective acceptance of those teachings

when he has gained reflective acceptance

of those teachings enthusiasm springs up

in him when enthusiasm has sprung up he

applies his will having applied his will

he scrutinizes having scrutinized he

strides resolute striving he realizes

with the body the Supreme Truth and sees

it by penetrating it with wisdom now I

don't know if you remember the second

discourse that I gave on this retreat

yes

the trap kazuto this is the same thing

as the track you supa this is the same

things that chunk that the student kept

on asking questions how does this happen

how does that happen when the Buddha

kept on going until he went through all

of this okay now he's talking he's still

talking to these two monks that are too

prideful to let go of their meal there

has not been that faith monks and there

has not been that visiting and there has

not been the paying of respect and there

has not been the giving of ear there has

not been the hearing of Dhamma and there

has not been that memorizing of Dhamma

and there has not been the examination

of the meaning there has not been a

reflective acceptance of the teachings

there has not been that enthusiasm and

there has not been that application of

will and there has not been that

scrutiny and there has not been that

striving monks you have lost your way

monks you have been practicing the wrong

way how far you a straight misguided men

from the Dhamma and the discipline now

these two monks there's an awful lot of

rules in lavinia that these monks

inspired

they were not what we would call great

monk staying around with they didn't do

any studying they SAT around eating all

the time they didn't do any practice

they thought that being being a punk was

a great life because they didn't have to

work and there are there's one set of

rules it's called a song a decisive the

last of the Sangha the sasa which is a

major rule for monks to break and it

talks about some of the things that they

did they talk about taking their robe

off and throwing it on the ground and

having a dancing girl dance on top of

the rows while they were clapping and

having fun than they were doing they did

all kinds of just really insane things

so this this is the first time the

buddha came to see them and that's why

he's really truing them out pretty

heavily because they're not what's the

sense of being a monk if you're not

going to follow the rules of the month

and you're not going to try to purify

your mind there's no sense in being a

monk if you're not going to do that bunk

there is a for free statement and when

it is recited a wise man would quickly

understand it I shall recite it to you

monks try to understand it then our will

sir who are we that we should understand

the Dhamma monks even with a teacher who

is concerned with material things and

heir to material things attached to

material things such haggling by his

disciples would not be proper if we get

this we will do it if we don't get this

we won't do it so what should be be said

when a teacher the teacher is the two

target a-- who is utterly detached from

material things monks for a faithful

disciple who is intent on fathoming the

teachers dispensation it is proper that

he conduct himself thus the Blessed One

is the teacher I am the disciple the

blessed one knows i do not know for

faithful disciple who is intent on

fathoming the teachers dispensation the

teachers dispensation is nourishing and

refreshing for a faithful disciple who

is intent on fatha me the teachers

dispensation it is proper that he

conducts himself thus willingly let only

my skin sinews and bones ramin and let

the flesh and blood dry up on my body

but my energy my but my energy shall not

be relaxed for as long as I have not

attained what can be attained by manly

strength manly energy and manly

persistence I'm sure that there would be

some real not liking of this statement

by the feminist but you get the idea of

it has to be strong faith strong energy

and strong persistence for a faithful

disciple who is intent on fathoming the

teachers dispensation one of two fruits

may be expected either final knowledge

here and now or if there's a trace of

cleaning left not return that is what

the

Blessid once said the monks were

satisfied and delighted in the Blessed

once words under two hours but we

covered a lot of different subjects on

this one so does anybody have any

question ok [ __ ] he might not return

on a gummy the second stage of our third

stage of the night not returning to a

meaningful yes the when in agony dies

from this world they are reborn in

brahmaloka and there they will attain

are a hot show and from then then when

their body fades away they will attain

parent evanna you have to be in our hot

Turk and Carla yeah see the first Age of

Enlightenment is called a soda pond you

will have no more than seven rebirths ok

you will never be reborn lower than the

human realm when you say you'd never get

any higher than soda pas de and you die

from this realm and you're reborn again

as a human being you will have you will

know for sure that you are a soda pond

and you will not break any of the

precepts for a reason so getting back to

the

because right now please be careful this

is only one more day of meditation let

go of your planning let go the rest of

size six are everything work hard please

really temple diligent so that you don't

have to do any more thanks everyone they

suffering for yourself here the speed

may the greenish at all with family all

these Kundalini may all beings share the

spirit that we have thus acquired an

acquisition of all kinds of happiness

he's an avocation birth was enough power

share this Maribel's a longer detect the

rest of sensation
