okay so tonight we get to go through
dependent origination in more detail
than I have for this retreat so far thus
have I heard of one occasion the blessed
one was living in sawatya Jettas Grove
and it's in pendejas park now on that
occasion of pernicious view had arisen
in a monk named saeki son of a fisherman
thus as I understood the Dhamma taught
by the Blessed One it is the same
consciousness that runs and wanders
through the rounds of rebirths not
another this particular review is very
broad because they have a belief in
reincarnation that the same
consciousness days with you from
lifetime to lifetime so he was rather
attached to this view several months
having heard about this went to the
monks aati and ask him friend saati is
it true that such a pernicious view has
arisen in you exactly so friends as I
understand
taught by the blessed one it is the same
consciousness that runs and wanders
through the rounds of rebirth not
another man then those monks desiring to
detach him from that pernicious view
pressed and questioned and cross
questioned him thus friends sake do not
say so do not misrepresent the blessed
one it is not good to misrepresent the
blessed one the blessed one would not
speak thus for in many ways the blessed
one has stated consciousness to be
dependently arisen sets without a
condition there is no origination of
consciousness yet although pressed in
question and cross-question by those
monks in this way the monks auty son of
a fisherman still obstinately adhered to
that previous view and continued to
insist upon it since the monks were
unable to detach him from that
pernicious view they went to the Blessed
One after paying homage to him sat down
at one side and told him all that had
occurred adding venerable sir since we
could not detach the monks off teeth son
of a fisherman from his pernicious view
we have reported this matter to the
blessed one now every time it says his
name and son of a fisherman his father
was a fisherman but sati hated the smell
of fish and this is kind of a gentle
monk put down to keep calling him son of
a fisherman
then the blessed one addressed a certain
month thus come up let the monks at the
son of a fisherman in mind it count monk
tell them tell the monk sake son of a
fisherman and might name that the
teacher calls him yes Ben herbal Surrey
replied and he went to the monks aati
and told him the teacher calls you for
inside T yes friend now this is
something that happened during the time
of the Buddha that everybody in robes
addressed each other as friend when
Buddha on right before he attained
parinibbana he changed that and he said
the senior monk should be called bhante
Reverend sir and the junior monk should
be called iluso which means friend and
sometimes it's done and most of the time
it's not
bunty is my day spa day yes friend he
replied and he went to the blessed one
and after paying homage to him sat down
at one side the blessed one that asked
him Satya is a truth of the following
pernicious view as arisen in you as I
understand the dhamma talk by the
Blessed One it is the same consciousness
that runs and wanders through the rounds
of rebirth not another exactly so dinner
will serve as I understand the dhamma
talk by the Blessed One it is the same
consciousness that runs and wanders
through the realms of rebirth not
another what is that consciousness of T
venerable sir it is that which speaks
and feels and experiences hearing their
the results of good and bad actions
misguided man to whom have you ever told
no need to teach the Dhamma in that way
how misguided man is pretty rough speech
for the Buddha I mean he doesn't say
that kind of thing very often so if he
says misguided man it's like getting
slapped with a wet towel misguided man
have I not stated in many ways
consciousness to be dependently arisen
since without a condition there is no
origination of consciousness but you
misguided men have misrepresented
misrepresented as for by you're wrong
grasp and injured yourself and stored up
much demerit for this will lead to your
harm and suffering for a long time I
happened to me where there was some
Brahmins
this country column hindus they don't
call themselves that they call
themselves brahman and they were talking
with a very senior monk and they said
what is the difference between what
you're teaching and what we're
practicing so the senior monk said that
there is no self everything is
impersonal and the Brahmin said well
that's basically the same thing that
we're saying because everything is God
is all the same thing so we're
practicing the same thing we're
practicing a permanent self and you're
practicing no self and it means the same
thing and I wanted to say to that
Brahman give me your wallet with all of
your money and I would take the money
out and then give him back his wallet
and say it's the same thing whether that
wallet has money in it or not right
that's what I wanted to do that i didn't
but they got in a long discussion about
how it wasn't the same thing but the
brahmins are very a steadfast in their
view and their belief in a permanent
self
then the blessed one had dreads address
the monks thus monks what do you think
has this mock sake son of the fishermen
kindled even a spark of wisdom in this
dominant discipline how could he
venerable sir no venerable sir when that
was said the monks at ease some of the
fishermen SAT silent dismayed with
shoulders drooping and head down glum
and without response then knowing this
the Blessed run propelled him misguided
man you will be recognized by your
pernicious view I shall question amongst
on this matter and we still recognize in
